🎯 How to Choose — Type A vs Type B
🔴 Choose Type A — Single Headed
🔵 Choose Type B — Double Headed
Where Are Hydrant Valves Used?
IS:5290 ISI-marked hydrant (landing) valves in single and double-headed configurations are the primary firewater delivery interface across every fire hydrant ring main system — from commercial building perimeters to oil refinery battery limits and marine terminal jetties.
Oil & Gas Refineries
Double-headed Type B valves at ring main hydrant posts throughout process units, pump stations, and flare areas. Single-headed Type A at peripheral fence-line points. SS 316 where H₂S or aggressive vapour atmosphere is present.
HVDH-63-GM + HVDH-63-SMPetrochemical Plants
Type B double-headed at battery limit hydrant posts for two-jet fire attack. Type A at hydrant cabinets and indoor hose reel stations. All three material grades used depending on the specific unit's corrosion classification.
HVDH-63-SS304 / HVDH-63-GMLNG & LPG Terminals
Full SS 316 specification throughout — Type A at cabinet stations and Type B at open ring main stand posts. Marine atmosphere and cryogenic liquid spill risk demand maximum corrosion resistance in all hydrant valve components.
HVOT-IS-63-SS316 + HVDH-63-SMPorts & Marine Terminals
SS 316 hydrant valves essential for jetty, berth, and quayside firewater systems. Salt spray and tidal splash zone environments cause rapid corrosion in GM or SS 304 valves — SS 316 is the mandatory specification for marine deployments.
HVOT-IS-63-SS316 + HVDH-63-SMAirports & Aviation
Type A and Type B hydrant valves at perimeter ring main stand posts for aircraft hangar external protection, fuel farm hydrant networks, and runway fire service access points. SS 304 or GM per project specification.
HVOT-IS-63-SS304 / HVDH-63-GMPower Plants
Type A at hydrant cabinet stations in turbine hall corridors and transformer yards. Type B double-headed at open ring main stand posts near coal yards and main transformer pads. Gun Metal standard for inland power stations.
HVOT-IS-63-GM + HVDH-63-GMIndustrial Parks & SEZs
Type A single-headed at individual plot boundary hydrant posts across multi-tenant industrial estates. Gun Metal specification for standard inland industrial ring mains. SS 304 where chemical storage tenants require enhanced corrosion resistance.
HVOT-IS-63-GM / HVOT-IS-63-SS304Commercial & Institutional
Type A single-headed at fire hydrant cabinets, hose reel stations, and external yard hydrant outlets for hospitals, malls, offices, hotels, and campuses. IS:5290 ISI-marked Gun Metal is the standard NBC-compliant specification.

Frequently Asked Questions
Technical and commercial questions about IS:5290 hydrant (landing) valves in SS 304, SS 316, and Gun Metal — answered by the Kinde Fire engineering team.
Both are oblique-type hydrant (landing) valves manufactured to IS:5290 — the difference is the number of outlets and inlet size:
- Type A (Single Headed): One 63mm female instantaneous outlet. 75mm flanged inlet. Flow rated at 900 LPM at 7 kg/cm². Used for single hose line hydrant points — fire cabinets, external yard posts, and standard building ring main outlets.
- Type B (Double Headed): Two independent 63mm female instantaneous outlets. 100mm flanged inlet. Flow rated at 1800 LPM at 7 kg/cm². Used for industrial ring main stand posts where two simultaneous hose line deployments are required from one connection point.
Working pressure, testing, finish, and warranty are identical across both types. The choice is determined by your ring main size and whether one or two simultaneous hose lines are required from the hydrant point.
The 63mm female instantaneous coupling is a standard IS:903 quick-connect hose coupling that allows fire hose pipes to be connected and disconnected rapidly without tools. It is the universal Indian fire hose connection standard.
- Accepts any 63mm male instantaneous coupling — standard on Indian fire hose pipes (IS:636 Type 1 and Type 2)
- Also accepts 63mm male instantaneous delivery nozzle assemblies directly
- Quick quarter-turn connect / disconnect for rapid hose deployment under emergency conditions
- PVC blank cap with chain supplied fitted to protect the female coupling when not in use
For export projects requiring Storz, BSP, or other coupling standards — contact our team at enquiry stage for adapted outlet options.
An oblique-type hydrant valve has its inlet and outlet at an angle (typically 45°) to each other — as opposed to a straight-through (inline) or right-angle (90°) configuration. IS:5290 specifies the oblique type for Indian fire hydrant systems because:
- The angled flow path reduces turbulence and pressure drop compared to a full 90° turn
- The spindle-operated valve mechanism suits the oblique body geometry for reliable sealing at rated working pressures
- The outlet faces forward and slightly downward — ergonomically suited for hose coupling attachment by a firefighter
- Provides a compact assembly footprint on stand post hydrant bodies compared to straight-through designs
Yes — all Kinde Fire hydrant valves provide an adjustable discharge pattern from full bore jet to straight stream, controlled by the nozzle or branch pipe attached to the hose — not by the valve body itself.
- The hydrant valve opens and closes the waterway — it does not itself control the discharge pattern
- Pattern adjustment is done at the delivery nozzle (jet/spray/fog nozzle) attached to the hose end
- Full bore: Maximum flow rate — used for foam making, tank cooling, and exposure protection
- Straight stream: Concentrated jet — maximum throw distance for direct fire attack
- Flow Rate marking on the valve body per IS:5290 Type A specification
All three deliver identical hydraulic performance — same flow rate, same pressure rating, same test pressures, same IS:5290 compliance. The difference is purely corrosion resistance and component material:
- SS 304: Full stainless steel construction — body, bonnet, spindle, outlets, nuts. Good general corrosion resistance. Spring to IS:6528. Best for inland industrial and sheltered environments.
- SS 316: Full SS 316 construction throughout — 2% molybdenum addition gives significantly superior chloride, pitting, and crevice corrosion resistance vs SS 304. Spring to IS:6258. Mandatory for marine, coastal, and LNG environments.
- Gun Metal: GM body/bonnet/outlets/nuts with CI handwheel and phosphorus bronze spring (Type A GM spindle; Type B brass spindle). Excellent pressure and wear resistance. Most cost-effective. Standard for inland Indian industrial and commercial projects.
In the double-headed Type B valve, the spindle operates a larger, heavier valve mechanism serving two outlets simultaneously. Brass is specified for the Type B GM spindle because:
- Brass offers slightly better machinability for the longer, more complex Type B spindle geometry versus gun metal
- Brass provides good corrosion resistance in the water-wetted spindle environment — comparable to gun metal for inland freshwater ring main service
- Standard practice in IS:5290 Type B Gun Metal valve manufacture — the performance and service life are equivalent to a gun metal spindle in the same application
For projects where a full Gun Metal spindle is specified in the BOQ — contact our team. For SS 304 or SS 316 Type B valves, the spindle is full SS 304 / SS 316 respectively throughout.
Yes — across all six variants (SS 304, SS 316, and Gun Metal in both Type A and Type B), the handwheel is Cast Iron with a black finish as per IS:5290 standard specification. This is consistent across the entire range.
- Cast Iron handwheels are the IS:5290 standard — widely available for replacement
- For severe marine / offshore environments where full stainless external components are specified — SS handwheel options are available on request at order stage
- Handwheel size and spoke count are per IS:5290 dimensional requirements for the given valve size
Every hydrant valve undergoes a three-stage test protocol before dispatch:
- Dimensional Inspection: All critical dimensions verified against IS:5290 and internal drawing — inlet/outlet sizes, thread form, coupling dimensions, spindle travel
- Seat Leakage Test: Valve closed and pressurised to 14 kg/cm²(g) for 2.5 minutes — zero leakage past the seat is required to pass
- Body Hydrostatic Test: Full body pressurised to 21 kg/cm²(g) for 2.5 minutes — no leakage or distortion permitted through body, bonnet, or gland
Test reports for all three stages are supplied with every valve. Third-party inspection (Bureau Veritas, TÜV, SGS, RITES, Lloyds) available on request at buyer's cost with 7–10 additional days lead time.
